10 engine variants, 3 gearbox families: why the Ducato is one of the trickiest light commercial vehicles to identify correctly

The trap starts with the engine capacity. The engine code F1AE0481D appears on both the 2.3 Multijet and the 2.3 JTD: two similar commercial names, two different contexts, and a gearbox that may not be the same. On the 2.3 Multijet, four codes coexist — F1AE0481D, F1AE0481N, F1AE3481D and F1AGL411D — and depending on the code stamped on the block, the associated gearbox will be either a 5-speed or a 6-speed. The year of first registration or the body generation alone are not enough to determine this: the engine code takes precedence.

Diesel, petrol, manual or Comfort-Matic: what the gearbox breakdown reveals

The vast majority of Ducatos covered here are fitted with a manual gearbox, either 5-speed or 6-speed. The Comfort-Matic automated manual gearbox is reserved exclusively for the 3.0 Multijet (codes F1CE0481D and F1CE3481E), which also offers a 6-speed manual. At the other end of the range, the older engines — 2.5 TD (codes 8140.27 and 8140.47), 1.9 JTD (DHX / XUD9TF/L) and 2.8 JTD (8140.43S) — are fitted exclusively with a 5-speed manual, with no alternative. The 2.8 HDI follows the same logic. The 3.0 T-Jet, the only petrol unit in the range (code F1CFA401), is paired with a 6-speed manual. The 2.0 Multijet (250A1000) and the 2.2 Multijet (codes 4HU and 4HV) may be fitted with either number of speeds depending on the exact configuration of the vehicle.

Two possible options depending on the condition of your original unit

For gearboxes within this range, two options are available: supply of a reconditioned unit in exchange for the return of your old unit, or a rebuild of your own gearbox, which is returned to you once fully reconditioned. This second option may be the right choice when the gearbox has suffered partial damage or when the exact reference is difficult to source on the market. In all cases, the engine code and, where possible, the reference of the original gearbox remain the essential starting points to avoid any misidentification.

    Frequently asked questions

Is a gearbox for this Fiat model in stock?

We currently list 93 references reconditioned for this model. Availability depends on the exact engine: enter your number plate to confirm stock in real time, or request an online quote.

How can I be sure it is compatible with my Fiat?

Compatibility depends on the engine / gearbox code, not just the model. The most reliable way is your number plate or registration document: our advisers confirm the right gearbox for your vehicle before you order.

Do I need to send back my old unit?

Yes, that is the principle of an exchange unit: you return your old gearbox (the core), which we recondition in turn. We arrange transport both ways, so you don't have to handle any logistics.

How long does it take to receive the gearbox for my Fiat?

Once compatibility is confirmed and depending on the availability of the reference, the part leaves our workshop ready to fit, delivered throughout France and Europe, with payment in instalments available (up to 10 payments).
