Espace 2.0 petrol or 2.0 dCi: 5-speed or 6-speed gearbox, and why they are not interchangeable?

The answer comes down to the engine and the year of production: the 2.0 petrol (engine codes F4R794, F4R795, F4R796, from 2002 to 2014) was fitted, depending on the variant, with either a 5-speed or a 6-speed gearbox, whereas the 2.0 dCi (engine code M9R) is paired exclusively with a 6-speed manual. These families are not interchangeable: the JC5, PK4 and PK6 references correspond to different bellhousings, shafts and gear ratios.

Identifying the correct gearbox for the 2.0 petrol

Three engine codes share the same 2.0 petrol displacement on the Espace IV (2002–2014). The choice between a 5-speed and a 6-speed does not depend solely on the year: certain trim levels and intermediate model years were available with both families. The number stamped on the gearbox casing — separate from the engine code — is the only reliable way to remove any doubt before ordering. The 5-speed range references (JC5 series JC5) and the 6-speed range references (PK4, PK6 series PK4, PK6, including PK4005, PK4023, PK6S12, PK6060, PK6010) share neither casing nor selector.

2.0 dCi and available purchase options

The 2.0 dCi M9R, a more recent and higher-torque engine, places greater stress on the 1st and 2nd gear synchronisers — a well-documented weak point on this Renault diesel family under heavy urban use. For this unit, as with the petrol versions, two purchase options are available: a reconditioned gearbox sold on an exchange basis, or a rebuild of your own gearbox, the latter returning your vehicle's original unit after a full overhaul — particularly useful when the gearbox has a specific history or configuration that needs to be preserved.
