Tough but not indestructible: what wear on Maxity 2.5 and 3.0 dCi transmissions reveals

The Renault Maxity is a light truck built for intensive use, and its gearboxes bear the marks of it. On units fitted with the 2.5 dCi (engine code YD25DDTi), the most common symptoms are difficulty engaging first gear or reverse, bearing noise under load, and chronic oil leaks caused by seals stressed by repeated heat cycles. On the 3.0 dCi (engine code ZD30DDTI), which is less common in fleets, field reports point more to failing synchronisers on the higher ratios — consistent with motorway use or collection routes. When these faults appear on a working vehicle, a complete gearbox replacement is often necessary sooner than it would be on a light passenger car.

Two engines, three gearboxes: identification allows no room for guesswork

The 2.5 dCi can be fitted with either a 5-speed or a 6-speed gearbox, depending on the generation and configuration of the vehicle. The 3.0 dCi is always paired with a 6-speed. These gearboxes share a similar profile, but their bell housings, ratios and mounting points differ: a reference such as 32010LC11A, 32010LC12A or 32131MB72B is not interchangeable with a 32010MB91A without first verifying the engine code and original configuration. Going solely by engine capacity or body style risks ordering the wrong unit.

Supply options available for this range

For the Renault Maxity gearboxes listed here, two options are available: exchange, where you return your faulty unit, and rebuilding your own gearbox, an option that is particularly relevant when the exact reference is hard to find or when the vehicle is covered by a maintenance contract that requires the original serial numbers to be retained.
