From the 1.4 MZ-CD to the 2.5 Turbo petrol: two opposing turbo philosophies at Mazda

Mazda's turbocharged range falls clearly into two camps. On the diesel side, the 1.4 MZ-CD, 1.6 MZR-CD and the SKYACTIV-D 2.2 family (codes SHY1, SHY4, SHY6, SHY8, SH01, Y601, DV4TD) use variable-geometry turbos: movable vanes continuously adjust the exhaust gas flow area, which exposes the actuator and vane ring to chronic heat and fouling. On the petrol side, the 2.3 MZR DISI Turbo fitted to the CX-7 (code L3-VDT, reference K0422-582) and the 2.5 Turbo SKYACTIV-G fitted to the Mazda 3 and CX-5 (code PY-VPTS, references PY8V-13700-A/B) use a fixed-geometry design with a wastegate: boost pressure is regulated by a mechanical valve with no movable vanes, but thermal stresses are more severe because petrol exhaust gas temperatures are significantly higher than those of an equivalent diesel.

SKYACTIV-D: four SHY variants, one 2.2

The 2.2 SKYACTIV-D is the most widely represented engine in the catalogue, fitted to the Mazda 3, Mazda 6, CX-5 and Mazda 2. However, behind a single engine capacity sit several engine codes — SHY1, SHY4, SHY6, SHY8 — corresponding to outputs of 150 hp and 175 hp, and the associated turbo references (series 810358-5005S, SH01-13-700A to SH01-13-700E) are not interchangeable across all these variants. The key point to watch: output alone is not enough to identify the correct reference — the engine code stamped on the front face of the block is the determining factor. The 1.6 MZR-CD (DV4TD, Mazda 2 and earlier-generation Mazda 3) shares its turbo mapping with other PSA blocks of the same era, which results in a particularly long cross-reference list (753420-5006S and its OEM equivalents 3M5Q-6K682-AA to AZ). The 1.4 MZ-CD (54359880009, 2S6Q-6K682-AC/AD) is rarer and applies exclusively to the earliest generations of the Mazda 2.

    Failure causes and replacement prerequisites

On SKYACTIV-D engines, progressive fouling of the variable-geometry vanes — often made worse by overdue oil changes or degraded oil — causes a gradual loss of power and a characteristic whistling noise as engine speed rises. On the 2.3 MZR DISI and the 2.5 Turbo petrol, failures more commonly affect the bearings and sump seal integrity, indicating insufficient lubrication or oil heavily contaminated with unburnt fuel. In every case, fitting a new turbo without addressing the root cause — oil quality, pump flow rate, blocked oil feed pipe, foreign body in the intake — will lead to rapid repeat failure. All seven references in the catalogue are available as new turbos.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new or reconditioned, together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Mazda.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Yes, the turbo is sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo once the new one has been delivered and fitted. We arrange the collection, so you have no logistics to handle.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Mazda?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
