Land Rover diesel turbos: from the Td5 of the early 2000s to the 2.0 D AJ200D of the latest generation

The Land Rover diesel range has undergone several major technological shifts. The 2.5 Td5 (code 10P / 15P) was fitted to the Defender and Discovery until the early 2000s, using a fixed-geometry turbo with a mechanical wastegate. The move to the TDV6 2.7 (code AJTDV6, 190 hp) and then to the TDV6 3.0 (code 306DT / 306DDTX, from 211 to 272 hp) introduced twin-turbo architectures on the Range Rover and Discovery, with variable-geometry turbos whose actuators and vanes are prone to clogging. The TDV8 4.4 (codes AJD-V8 / 368DT / SDV8, 313 and 340 hp) adds yet another layer of complexity with its two sequential turbos mounted on a V8 subject to high thermal stress. More recently, the 2.2 TD4 / SD4 / eD4 (codes 224DT / DT224 / DW12B / DW12BTED4, Freelander, Evoque, Discovery Sport) and the 2.0 D AJ200D (codes 204DTD / 204D3) represent the most recent generation covered here.

Identification pitfalls: one engine, several possible turbos

On the 3.0 TDV6, the 211, 245, 249, 256 and 272 hp outputs each correspond to a different turbo, with distinct manufacturer references (LR003578, LR006862, LR024702, LR029637 for the 2.7 TDV6; LR022790, LR049589 for the high-power 3.0 SDV6). The 2.2 TDCi Puma fitted to the Defender (code M47) is not interchangeable with the 2.2 DW12 found in the Freelander or Evoque, despite sharing the same engine capacity. On the 2.0 AJ200D, several reference indices coexist (G4D36K682AD to G4D36K682AH, JDE36863, JDE39005, JDE39467, JDE40740, LR073722, LR083483, LR094424, LR140581): the model year and stated power output determine which exact reference is required.

Symptoms and root causes to address before any replacement

On V6 and V8 TDV6 / TDV8 engines, CHRA failure typically presents as a whistling noise under load, blue smoke when cold, or a drop in boost pressure. The root cause is almost always oil-related: a contaminated lubrication circuit or degraded oil will destroy a new turbo just as quickly as the old one. On variable-geometry engines (3.0 TDV6, 2.2 TD4), vane seizure caused by carbon deposits can trigger a limp-home mode even when the CHRA itself is not necessarily beyond use. Addressing the root cause — oil change, lubrication circuit flush, EGR diagnosis — is essential before fitting the new unit. The turbos offered by EDEN BOITES are available new or reconditioned depending on the reference; the sales method (outright sale or exchange) is specified on each product page.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new or reconditioned, together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Land Rover.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Yes, the turbo is sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo once the new one has been delivered and fitted. We arrange the collection, so you have no logistics to handle.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Land Rover?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
