Cabstar 2.5 dCi: robust 5-speed gearbox, fragile 6-speed gearbox — two realities for the same engine

On the Cabstar 2006–2013 fitted with the YD25DDTi block, the transmission is not uniform: some vehicles were fitted with a 5-speed manual, others with a 6-speed manual, and the two share neither the same architecture nor the same reliability record. The 6-speed gearbox is more prone to difficult gear changes and synchromesh wear, particularly on the intermediate ratios, in heavy-load or frequent-start applications. The 5-speed, which has a longer lineage, holds up better under intensive use but is not without its issues — sump leaks and bearing wear can occur at high mileages.

Identifying the correct gearbox before ordering

The gearbox reference appears on a plate or marking directly on the casing: references such as 32010MB720, 32010MB91A or 32010LC62A correspond to distinct variants. The year of manufacture and the vehicle configuration — chassis cab or tipper — can influence the choice. Mixing up the two gearbox families results in direct mechanical incompatibility. Two purchasing options are available in this collection: exchange basis and rebuild of your own gearbox, the latter allowing you to retain the vehicle's original reference.
