Audi A4 Turbo: new for the vast majority of engine variants, reconditioned for a few specific references

In this collection, the overwhelming majority of turbos are sold new — as a straightforward sale, with no old unit to return. Only a handful of turbos, notably on the 2.0 TDI 170 hp, the 1.8 T and certain variants of the 2.0 TDI 120/136/143, are available in reconditioned form. This immediately shapes your choice: if your engine variant only has a reconditioned reference available and your original turbo is damaged but repairable, having your own unit rebuilt may make sense in order to retain the exact original reference — particularly on older engines where the CHRA and bearing wear tolerances are critical.

An A4 with a turbocharged engine, from the 1.9 TD 75 hp to the RS4 bi-turbo 450 hp

The Audi A4 spans several generations and an exceptionally wide range of engine variants. On the diesel side, the range runs from the 1.9 TDI (90 to 130 hp, fixed or variable geometry depending on output) through to the 3.0 TDI (204 to 286 hp, variable-geometry turbo). In between, the 2.0 TDI is the most common engine variant, with outputs ranging from 120 to 204 hp — and distinct turbo references depending on the engine code, not simply on the stated power output. The engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable way to identify the correct reference: a 2.0 TDI 136 hp can correspond to several different codes (for example BRE, BRF or CAHA) which do not all use the same part. On the petrol side, the 1.8 T and the various versions of the 2.0 TFSI (from 180 to 220 hp) use wastegate turbos, whilst the RS4 2.9 TFSI bi-turbo 450 hp uses two separate turbos — a configuration that makes it essential to check both lubrication circuits before starting the engine.

Causes of failure and precautions before replacement

On the 2.0 TDI, progressive fouling caused by a degraded EGR circuit or DPF is a common cause of premature bearing wear. On TFSI engines, the quality and regularity of oil changes directly determines turbo service life: degraded oil starves the bearings of lubrication during high-rev driving. Common symptoms — whistling, blue smoke from the exhaust, a marked loss of power or the vehicle entering limp mode — should prompt you to identify the root cause before fitting a replacement turbo. Replacing the turbo without addressing the underlying cause (air leak, fouling, insufficient oil pressure) will invariably lead to a repeat failure.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Audi A4 Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Audi A4 Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
