Five engines, four gearbox families: the A1 city car and what its intensive use demands of replacement

A city car by nature, the A1 racks up short gear changes, repeated clutch engagements in traffic jams, and back-to-back cold starts. Between 2010 and 2018, Audi offered it with five engines — three petrol units (1.0 TFSI, 1.2 TFSI, 1.4 TFSI) and two diesels (1.6 TDI, 2.0 TDI) — spanning four distinct gearbox families: 5-speed manual, 6-speed manual, DSG 6 and DSG 7. This pattern of intensive urban use explains why the manual gearboxes on these models tend to wear the synchromesh mechanism first, whilst the DSG units accumulate stress on the dual-clutch in heavy traffic.

Choosing the right replacement based on the engine and its codes

The smaller-capacity engines — 1.0 TFSI (codes CHZB, DKLA, DKRF) and 1.2 TFSI (codes CBZA, CBZB) — are fitted exclusively with a 5-speed manual. The 2.0 TDI (code CFHD) is also limited to a manual, but in 6-speed form. The situation is more complex on the 1.4 TFSI (codes CAVG, CAXA, CTHG, CZCA, CZEA): depending on the variant and year, it may be fitted with either a 6-speed manual or a DSG 7 — two entirely different units. The 1.6 TDI (codes CAYB, CAYC) is the only engine to combine three options — 5-speed manual, DSG 6 and DSG 7 — making it essential to confirm exactly which gearbox was fitted as original equipment before placing any order.

DSG 6 and DSG 7: a technical distinction not to be overlooked

The DSG gearboxes offered here are supplied without the mechatronic unit, with a new dual-clutch included. The DSG 6 and DSG 7 share neither architecture nor part references: confusing the two when ordering makes fitting impossible. On the A1, the dry-clutch DSG 7 is fitted to lower-torque variants; the wet-clutch DSG 6 (oil-bath) is found on the 1.6 TDI in its higher-torque versions. For vehicles requiring a full rebuild, EDEN BOITES also offers to recondition the customer's original unit, which is then returned to them — a different arrangement from the exchange basis.

    Frequently asked questions

Is a gearbox for this Audi model in stock?

We currently list 30 references reconditioned for this model. Availability depends on the exact engine: enter your number plate to confirm stock in real time, or request an online quote.

How can I be sure it is compatible with my Audi?

Compatibility depends on the engine / gearbox code, not just the model. The most reliable way is your number plate or registration document: our advisers confirm the right gearbox for your vehicle before you order.

Do I need to send back my old unit?

Yes, that is the principle of an exchange unit: you return your old gearbox (the core), which we recondition in turn. We arrange transport both ways, so you don't have to handle any logistics.

How long does it take to receive the gearbox for my Audi?

Once compatibility is confirmed and depending on the availability of the reference, the part leaves our workshop ready to fit, delivered throughout France and Europe, with payment in instalments available (up to 10 payments).
