Land Rover diesel from 2007 to 2024: when a single 2.2 engine feeds four different turbo families

It is the classic trap with Land Rover diesel models from this period: the 2.2 TD4 is fitted to the Freelander, the Range Rover Evoque, the Defender and the Discovery Sport alike, yet the engine codes 224DT, 204DTD and DW12BTED4 do not share the same turbo. An LR reference or an FPLA reference cannot be carried over from one model to another, nor from one year to the next on the same model. The same logic applies to the 3.0 TDV6: the code 306DT and the 306DDTX (SDV6) denote two distinct architectures, with different turbo maps and variable-geometry configurations. The year of manufacture and the full engine code — not just the engine capacity — are the two essential pieces of information needed to identify the correct part.

Turbos, engines, gearboxes: what the Land Rover range covers

The most widely represented part family is the turbo (new and reconditioned), reflecting the well-known weaknesses of Land Rover diesel engines over this period: clogged variable geometry on the 2.2 and 2.4 TDCi with engine code 224DT or DT224, and central cartridge wear on the 4.4 TDV8 (codes AJD-V8 / 448DT). Bare engines cover nine references, from the 2.5 Td5 (Defender, Discovery — codes 10P / 15P) through to the 2.0 D 180 hp with engine code 204DTD introduced on the latest generations of the Evoque and Discovery Sport. The available gearboxes are 5- or 6-speed manuals, and two transfer cases complete the catalogue for permanent 4-wheel drive versions.

Defender and Range Rover Evoque: two opposite identification approaches

On the Defender, the model's long lifespan (up to 2016 for the original, revived in 2020) creates significant differences: the 2.5 Td5 122 hp of the early 2000s and the 2.4 TDCi Puma that replaced it share no mechanical parts whatsoever. On the Range Rover Evoque, it is the opposite: the body style barely changed between 2011 and 2018, yet engine codes 224DT (2.2) and 204DTD / AJ200D (2.0) correspond to mechanically incompatible generations. Checking the engine code stamped on the block before placing any order remains the only reliable approach for both models.
