Reconditioned Fiat Panda 1.2 Gearbox

Panda 1.2 from 2003 to 2012: a single 5-speed manual gearbox, but two distinct engine codes depending on the generation

Between 2003 and 2012, the Panda's 1.2 petrol engine spans two distinct generations. The second generation (2003–2012) covers this entire period with the same type of transmission — the 5-speed manual — yet two engine codes coexist across this range: 188A4000 and 169A4000. This is a critical point for identification: the compatible gearbox differs depending on the code stamped on the block, and a vehicle from the same model year may belong to either code depending on its exact configuration.

Identify the correct code first

The engine code is stamped directly on the block, usually readable from above or from the side. On the Panda 1.2, not confusing these two codes is the first thing to get right: the casings, internal ratios and mounting interfaces can differ between 188A4000 and 169A4000. Checking on the vehicle itself is more reliable than relying solely on the production date, which is not always sufficient to determine the correct code. The references available in this collection cover the full 2003–2012 range for both codes.
