Yeti 2.0 TDI: three gearbox architectures for an SUV pushed hard under load and on rough terrain

The Yeti is rarely used as a simple city car. Loaded, towing, driven on poor roads or used in 4x4 all-wheel drive, it subjects its transmission to far more demanding cycles than an ordinary saloon. It is precisely this usage profile that accelerates synchroniser wear on manual gearboxes and places greater strain on the mechatronic unit — covered separately — on the DSG 6. When the transmission fails, identifying the correct family is not straightforward: the Yeti 2.0 TDI (2009–2017) can be fitted with a 5-speed manual, a 6-speed manual or a DSG 6, depending on the engine code and transmission configuration.

Four engine codes, three distinct families

The codes CFHA, CFHC, CFJA and CBDB cover the entire production run. Each corresponds to a different power output and torque figure, and not all are compatible with the same gearboxes. The 5-speed manual is associated with entry-level front-wheel-drive versions, the 6-speed manual accompanies the more powerful engines, and the DSG 6 is fitted to the dual-clutch versions — supplied without the mechatronic unit, with a new dual-clutch assembly fitted. Checking the engine code stamped on the engine remains the only reliable identification criterion before ordering; engine capacity alone does not distinguish between families.
