On the Astra, the turbo rarely fails on its own: the underlying cause determines how long the replacement part will last

Regardless of which generation of Astra is involved, turbo failures follow recurring, well-documented patterns. On diesel units — the 1.7 CDTI, 1.9 CDTI and 1.6 CDTI in particular — bearing wear caused by degraded oil or insufficient lubrication at start-up remains the primary cause. A clogged EGR circuit or a blocked diesel particulate filter consistently makes matters worse by creating back-pressure that puts the turbo's seals under strain. On the petrol side, the 1.4 Turbo (engine code A14NET) and the 1.6 Turbo variants (A16LET, A16XHT, A16SHT) show characteristic whistling and blue exhaust smoke linked to failing turbine seals. In every case, fitting a new turbo without addressing the root cause — oil quality, lubrication circuit, EGR, DPF — will lead to a second failure in the short term.

A wide catalogue — engine codes must always be checked

The Astra range covers more than forty referenced engine codes, from the Z17DT to the B16DTH, including the Z19DTH and the A20DTH. The same engine capacity can correspond to variable or fixed-geometry turbos depending on power output and year: the 1.7 CDTI is available in 75, 80, 100, 101, 110 and 125 hp versions, each potentially requiring a distinct manufacturer reference. The 1.9 CDTI 120 hp (Z19DTL) and the 1.9 CDTI 150 hp (Z19DTH) do not share the same turbo despite having the same engine capacity. The 2.2 DTI (Y22DTR) and the 2.0 DTI (Y20DTH) are older units whose fixed-geometry turbos have become difficult to source at OEM quality. The collection includes new turbos for the vast majority of engine variants, and a reconditioned turbo available for the 1.6 CDTI 110, 120 and 136 hp versions (codes B16DTE, B16DTL, B16DTU, B16DTH). The engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable reference for selecting the correct manufacturer reference from the available equivalents.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Opel Astra Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Opel Astra Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
