On the Peugeot 2008 (2013–2025), eleven engine codes are spread across four engine families, and it is this code — visible on the engine identification plate — that determines the correct gearbox, not just the engine capacity. On the petrol side, the 1.2 PureTech covers four codes: HMZ, HNS, HNY and HNZ. Depending on the code, the associated gearbox is either a 5-speed or 6-speed manual — two distinct configurations that are not interchangeable. The 1.5 HDi gradually took over from 2018 onwards with a 6-speed gearbox featuring shorter overall gearing. On the 1.2 PureTech, the 5-speed and 6-speed gearboxes share neither the same casing nor the same shafts: checking the engine code before identifying any reference is essential. The 1.4 HDi (8HR / DV4C) is the least common engine in this range, with a single 5-speed gearbox configuration.
