The Peugeot 2008 spans a long period, from 2013 to the present day, across two distinct generations. When it comes to identifying the right gearbox, the engine is the starting point: the 1.2 PureTech can take either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed manual depending on the model year and engine code (HMZ, HNZ, HNY, HNS for the PureTech, YH01, YHZ for other variants). It's not the engine capacity that determines the fit — it's the code stamped on the block. On the diesel side, the 1.6 HDi (9HP / DV6DTED) and the 1.4 HDi (8HR / DV4C) are fitted with 5-speed manuals, whereas the 1.5 HDi (DV5RC / DV5RD) introduced on the second generation takes a 6-speed manual: the two families are not interchangeable.

When to opt for rebuilding your own unit

On this model, all gearboxes listed are available on an exchange basis. Rebuilding the original unit — where the customer's gearbox is reconditioned and then returned — makes particular sense when the reference is difficult to source, especially on high-volume variants such as the 1.2 PureTech 6-speed (engine codes HNS, HNY), or when the owner wishes to maintain the exact traceability of their transmission. This option is not available on all references: checking availability by engine code is an essential first step.

Key points for correct identification

The 1.2 PureTech alone accounts for four distinct references in this collection. A 2008 from 2014 and a 2008 from 2019 may share the same engine capacity yet require different gearboxes. The four-character engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable way to remove any ambiguity — the first registration date and fiscal horsepower rating are not sufficient. For the 1.6 HDi, the code 9H06 identifies a specific variant of the DV6: it must not be confused with the 9HP, even though the engine capacities are identical.
