The Citroën C5 1.6 HDi covers ten distinct engine codes across the 2005–2017 period: DV6DTED, DV6ETED, T1WA, T1WB, T1DA, T1BB, T3DA, T3DB, TZJA and BH01. These codes are not simply power variants — they correspond to different injection architectures, emissions standards and internal designs that make the units non-interchangeable. The code is stamped on the engine block itself; it is that code, not the year alone, that determines which part can be fitted.

DV6 and T-series families: two generations of engines on the C5

The codes DV6DTED and DV6ETED cover the earliest versions of the 1.6 HDi (C5 I, then early C5 II). The T family — T1WA/T1WB, T1DA/T1BB, T3DA/T3DB, TZJA, BH01 — is fitted to later model years, mainly from 2010 onwards on the C5 II, with progressive updates to the cylinder head, turbo and high-pressure injection system. A DV6DTED cannot replace a T3DB: the base geometry, sump castings and accessory mounting points are all different.

Key points to watch on this engine in heavy use

The 1.6 HDi is frequently used in mixed urban and road driving, a context in which the EGR valve and cooling circuit build up deposits and can mask serious underlying mechanical failure (cylinder head cracks, liner wear). On DV6 codes, the fragility of the timing chain tensioner is a well-established issue. Before placing any order, locate the engine code on the block itself — not on the V5C logbook, whose engine designation does not distinguish between sub-variants.
