Reconditioned Citroën C5 Engine

C5 I (2005–2008) and C5 II (2008–2017): two generations, engines that are not interchangeable

The Citroën C5 spans twelve years of production across two distinct generations, and the 2008 boundary is the first reference point to establish before any identification. Engine codes changed between the first and second series, even on identical engine capacities: a 2.0 HDi from 2006 and a 2.0 HDi from 2012 do not share the same block. The engine code stamped on the front face or side of the block remains the only reliable reference for confirming compatibility.

The 2.0 HDi and 1.6 HDi: the two dominant diesel families

The 2.0 HDi is the most common engine in this range, with codes ranging from G6DA to G6DG depending on power output and period, with codes RH02 and TXWA added for the later variants. The 1.6 HDi also comes in several codes (notably DV6DTED and DV6ETED): same engine capacity, same commercial name, but different blocks depending on the year and emissions standard. The 1.5 BlueHDi (DV5RC_YHZ) only appeared late in the C5 X7's production run and cannot be substituted for the older 1.6 HDi references, despite the similar engine capacity.

On the petrol side: THP, VTi and PureTech — three families with no mechanical relation

The 1.6 THP (codes 5FV, 5F02) is a turbocharged block co-developed with BMW/Mini, known for timing chain issues on early versions. The 1.6 VTi (BH01, UBGA) is naturally aspirated, with no turbo, and shares its architecture with other PSA models of the same era. The 1.2 PureTech (EB2ADTS_HNS) is a three-cylinder unit that appeared exclusively on the C5 II towards the end of production; its design bears no relation to either of the two 1.6 petrol engines. These three blocks are not interchangeable, and their references must be verified separately.
