Eight years of production, two distinct gearboxes: what the 169A4000 saw between 2007 and 2015

The 1.2 engine in the Fiat 500, identified by the code 169A4000, was fitted throughout the entire lifespan of the first modern generation, from 2007 to 2015. Over those eight years, two gearbox families coexisted: a 5-speed manual and the Dualogic, an automated version with electrohydraulic control. These two units are not interchangeable and share neither casing nor internal controls.

Manual and Dualogic: two mechanisms, two diagnoses

The 5-speed manual is typically the first to suffer from synchromesh wear, particularly on 2nd and 3rd gears in high-mileage urban examples. The Dualogic shares the same basic mechanical unit, but its actuator (robot) is a separate component: the gearbox is sold without the actuator. Before placing any order, it is therefore essential to identify which of the two components has failed. A faulty actuator with a sound mechanical unit does not warrant replacing the gearbox.

Identifying the correct reference for the 169A4000

A single engine code covers the entire 2007–2015 production run, but gearbox references changed over the model years. The exact reference is found on the label affixed to the gearbox casing, not on the engine block. The references included in this collection cover the successive variants of the 169A4000 over this period; checking the number stamped on the gearbox itself remains the only way to avoid a mismatch.
