Two gearboxes for a single engine code: the Fiat 500 1.2 from 2007 to 2015

Throughout the 2007–2015 period, the Fiat 500 1.2 uses a single engine code, the 169A4000, yet it feeds two entirely different transmission layouts: a 5-speed manual and a Dualogic. It is therefore not the year of manufacture that determines which part to order, but the transmission configuration chosen when the vehicle was originally purchased. Mixing the two up is the most common identification mistake.

Manual and Dualogic: two structurally different units

The 5-speed manual gearbox is a conventional transmission with direct mechanical control. The Dualogic is an automated manual: the mechanical gearbox itself is structurally identical, but it is fitted with an electro-hydraulic actuator (the "robot") that controls the clutch and gear changes. The Dualogic version is supplied without this actuator: only the mechanical assembly is covered. Symptoms pointing to the gearbox itself — bearing noise, difficult gear changes, play at the differential output — are distinct from faults specific to the actuator, which require a separate repair.
