The 1.8 TDCi in the Galaxy: why are there 10 different engine codes for a single engine capacity?

Because Ford and its partners (Volkswagen Group via the Galaxy, then Ford alone) developed this engine throughout the 2006–2015 period, adapting it to successive emissions standards and injection variants. The codes RWPA, RWPC, RWPD, QYWA, QYBA, KKDA, KKDB, HCPC, FFBA and 18DIT each designate a specific version: the same 1.8-litre capacity, but with a different cylinder head, valve timing or engine map depending on the generation.

Identifying the correct code before placing an order

The engine code is stamped directly on the block and also appears on the vehicle registration document under section P5. It is the only reliable reference for distinguishing, for example, a KKDA from a KKDB, or a QYWA from a QYBA: two similar-looking codes are not necessarily direct replacements for one another. Mixing them up can cause compatibility issues with the existing wiring loom or ECU.

Known weaknesses of this 1.8 TDCi

This diesel block shares with other Ford-PSA 1.8 TDCi engines a well-documented susceptibility to turbo fouling and EGR valve leaks, which can accelerate internal wear if left untreated. The bare engine supplied here is the block only, without ancillaries: the turbo, alternator, starter motor and accessories remain those of the original vehicle.
