Vivaro diesel from 2001 to 2024: three engine families, two replacement approaches

Over twenty-three years of production, the Vivaro has spanned three generations and several platforms shared with Renault. It is not the stated engine capacity that guides your choice of engine — it is the engine family. The 1.9 CDTi from the early years is built around the engine codes F9Q (F9Q-750, F9Q-760, F9Q-762, F9Q-772, F9Q-774…), a Renault architecture that is distinct from the later generations. The 2.0 CDTi corresponds to the engine codes M9R (M9R630, M9R692, M9R780 to M9R788, M9R7E7, M9R7M7), introduced on the second generation. The 1.6 CDTi is the most widely represented in the current catalogue, with the engine codes R9M (R9M408 to R9M452, R9MA4A4, R9MD4D4, R9MMА to R9MMH), which appeared on the third generation from 2014 onwards. The 1.5 CDTi (engine code DV5RUC_YHV) is the most recent and applies only to the model years closest to 2024. These families are not interchangeable: an R9M does not replace an M9R, even where the engine capacity is similar.

When rebuilding the original unit changes everything

For high-mileage commercial Vivaro vehicles, it is worth considering the replacement approach before placing an order. On light commercial vehicles, the engine often carries specific adaptations — power take-offs, towing accessories, soundproofing modifications — that make it very difficult to replace the original unit on a like-for-like basis with another example. In such cases, rebuilding the customer's own unit restores exactly the same engine, with all its individual characteristics, and eliminates any risk of mismatch. For standard Vivaro models or versions with no significant modifications, a bare exchange engine covers the vast majority of requirements. In all cases, the engine code stamped on the block — and not simply the engine capacity stated on the vehicle's documents — remains the essential starting point for avoiding any reference errors among the many coexisting R9M or M9R codes.
