From the 1KD-FTV of the early 2000s to the 8NR-FTS found in the C-HR and Aygo: why the engine code is decisive when choosing a Toyota turbo

On a Hilux or Land Cruiser fitted with the 2.5 D-4D, you might assume the entire range shares the same turbo. That is not the case: the 2KD-FTV covers outputs ranging from 88 to 144 hp depending on the variant and year, and the associated references — VB31, VB40, VB42, 17201-0L070 or 17201-27030 — are not interchangeable. The same applies to the 2.2 D-4D: the codes 2AD-FHV and 2AD-FTV refer to different architectures fitted to the Avensis, Auris, RAV4 and Verso at power outputs of 136, 150 or 177 hp. Mixing the two up leads directly to a fitment incompatibility.

Engine families and models: what this page covers

The turbos listed here cover the full Toyota range, from off-roaders to city cars, diesel and petrol alike. On the commercial and 4x4 side, the 1KD-FTV (3.0 D-4D 171 hp) is fitted to the Land Cruiser and Hilux with variable-geometry turbos using either a pneumatic or electric actuator depending on the generation. The 1VD-FTV in the 4.5 D V8 (Land Cruiser 200) runs a twin-turbo configuration — two turbos mounted in series — which means you need to identify precisely which of the two has failed. On the compact side, the 1CD-FTV in the 2.0 D-4D (Corolla, Avensis) and the 1ND-TV in the 1.4 D-4D (Corolla, Auris) each have their own references. For compact petrol versions, the 8NR-FTS in the 1.2 Turbo 116 hp (C-HR, Aygo) is a fixed-geometry turbocharger with a wastegate, with no equivalent in the diesel range.

Symptoms and points to check before replacement

On high-mileage D-4D engines, turbo failure often shows up as persistent blue smoke from the exhaust, an unusual whistling noise, or a loss of power under load. These symptoms may indicate worn bearings or a loss of seal integrity around the turbine. However, on the 1KD-FTV and 2KD-FTV engines in particular, a blocked oil circuit or insufficient oil return are common root causes: fitting a new turbo without addressing the underlying problem is simply condemning the part to early failure. Checking the condition of the oil filter, the quality of lubrication, and that there is no blockage in the oil return circuit is essential before any fitment. All turbos on this page are new: no unit to return, no prior deposit required. To identify the correct turbo, the engine code stamped on the block and the exact output of your version are the only two reliable criteria.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

The turbos on this page are new. Each product page states the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Toyota.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

No. The turbos on this page are new and sold as a straight sale: nothing to send back, your old turbo stays with you and there is one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Toyota?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
