Volkswagen Turbos from the 1.8 T to the Modern 2.0 TDI/TSI: Why the Exact Reference Makes All the Difference

Across a Volkswagen range as broad as this — from the Polo to the Transporter, from the Lupo to the Amarok — the same engine capacity can take turbos with radically different geometries, housings and actuators depending on the year of manufacture and the engine code stamped on the block. Identifying the correct turbo therefore requires the engine code, not just the quoted power output.

The turbos listed here are new turbos, sold as a straightforward purchase with no old unit to return. They cover 21 models in the Volkswagen catalogue, in diesel and petrol versions, across a wide range of engine configurations.

Common Identification Pitfalls on VW Vehicles

The most frequent case: the 2.0 TDI 140 spans at least two engine code families (BKD, BKP, BLB, BMM, BMP, BNA, BRE, BRF, BVF, BVG for the older generation; CBAB, CBDA, CBDB, CBEA, CJAA, CAGB, CFFB for the next generation), each with a distinct manufacturer reference. A turbo from the first family is not interchangeable with one from the second, even at the same power output.

The same logic applies to petrol engines: the 1.4 TSI covers codes ranging from BLG/BMY/BWK (140/170 hp versions) to CAXA (122 hp), CHPA/CPTA/CZEA (125–150 hp), and CNLA/CRJA/CUKB for the 150/156 hp hybrid version — each requiring a different turbo. On the 1.8 T, codes AEB, ANB, APU, AWU, AWV and BKF correspond to the 150 hp versions, whilst APP, ARZ and AUQ designate the 180 hp unit: the turbo is not the same.

Symptoms and Root Causes to Address Before Replacement

On TDI engines with variable-nozzle geometry (VNT), bearing wear typically presents as a whistling noise under acceleration, persistent blue smoke, or a limp-home mode with reduced power. On TSI and 1.8 T engines, failure most commonly stems from inadequate lubrication: degraded oil, a blocked feed pipe, or leaving the engine to stop too quickly after hard use. In both cases, fitting a new turbo without first eliminating the root cause will lead to another premature failure: checking the oil circuit, the turbo return line and the condition of the oil filter is essential before installation.

For the 2.5 TDI engines fitted to the Transporter and Crafter (codes ACV, AJT, ALX, AUF, AXL, AYC, AYY for the 88–102 hp versions; BJJ, BJK, CEBA, CEBB for the 88–109 hp versions; BJL, BJM, CECA, CECB for the 136–163 hp versions), the variety of references is particularly extensive: confusing sub-families will invariably result in a connection incompatibility. Reading the engine code directly from the block remains the only reliable way to select the correct manufacturer reference.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Volkswagen.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Volkswagen?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
