On the 2.0 HDi C4, the BMP6 and the 6-speed manual share neither parts nor failure patterns

The 2.0 HDi fitted to the C4 (2004–2018) comes in two engine codes, RHR and RHF, and may be paired with either a 6-speed manual gearbox or a BMP6 — Citroën's automated gearbox with an electrohydraulic actuator. These two transmissions share no common parts and their failure modes are entirely different: confusing the two families when placing an order is the most common mistake in this area.

BMP6: what the reconditioning covers and what it excludes

The BMP6 is supplied without its actuator, which is a separate component. The classic symptoms on this automated gearbox — jerky changes, refusal to shift, being stuck in limp mode — may stem from either the mechanical gearbox itself or the actuator: a prior diagnosis is essential to establish which part is at fault before placing any order.

6-speed manual: identifying the correct reference

For the manual version, the engine code alone is not sufficient to identify the exact reference: the power output and the model year of the vehicle determine which gearbox variant was fitted at the factory. The references available in this collection — including 20DS46, 20MB16, 20DS23 and 20MB33 — cover all RHR/RHF combinations across the period, but they are not interchangeable without first checking the axle ratio and the original reference.
