Ford Fiesta: 27 engine codes across six engine variants, from 2001 to 2017

The Fiesta spans sixteen years of production here, and that breadth translates directly into a significant fragmentation of available engine blocks. Between 2001 and 2017, Ford updated its engines in successive stages: the earliest petrol blocks from the Mk5 generation (codes F6JA, F6JB on the 1.25 Ti-VCT, 8HZ, 8HR on the 1.4 TDCi) gradually gave way to the updated Ti-VCT families and then to the EcoBoost, which alone accounts for ten distinct codes — a clear sign of frequent revisions to this three-cylinder turbocharged block.

Petrol: three families, codes that never overlap

On the petrol side, three architectures coexist. The 1.25 Ti-VCT (codes SPJA to SPJD) and the 1.4 Ti-VCT (codes XVGA, XVGB, XVGC, XPJB) share the same variable-timing family, but their blocks are not interchangeable: engine capacity, bore and code all differ. The 1.1 Ti-VCT (code M1JE or M1JH) is the most recent and only appears towards the end of the period. The EcoBoost 1.0 (codes SFJB to SFJP, YYJA, YYJE) is a three-cylinder unit with the turbo integrated into the exhaust manifold: its wide range of codes reflects power output variations (100, 125, 140 hp) and model year changes; checking the stamped code is the only reliable way to identify the correct block.

Diesel: 1.4 TDCi and 1.5 TDCi, two distinct generations

The 1.4 TDCi (codes 8HZ, 8HR, SNJA to SNJD) was fitted to the Mk5 and Mk6 generations; it is known for head gasket and turbo weaknesses under hard use. The 1.5 TDCi (codes STJB, SNJD depending on version) arrived on the Mk7 and represents a more modern architecture with different bore dimensions: the two diesel units share no internal components. Identification by engine code — not by engine capacity alone — is essential to avoid any ordering errors.
