Mégane I and II with 1.9 naturally aspirated or turbocharged diesel, Mégane III and IV with 1.5, 1.6 and 2.0 dCi or TCe petrol: four generations, turbos with nothing in common

The Mégane has spanned more than twenty-five years of production, with each generation bringing a fundamental change in engine line-up. The earliest diesel units — 1.9 dT 90 and 1.9 DTI (codes F8Q, F9Q, D 4192 T2) — use fixed-geometry turbos with a wastegate, typical of the indirect or semi-direct injection systems of that era. The Mégane II then stepped up the power with the 1.9 dCi in outputs ranging from 100 to 131 hp (F9Q, F9Q870, F9Q872) and the 2.0 dCi 150 and 163 (M9R 610, M9R 700, M9R 721, M9R 722), the latter adopting variable geometry. These engines share no turbo compatibility whatsoever, even where outputs are similar.

K9K and R9M: the same engine capacity family, but distinct references depending on output and year

The K9K 1.5 dCi is by far the most common engine on the Mégane III and IV, yet it comes in a very large number of variants: 90 hp (K9K 608, 612, 626, 628, 832, 838, 846, 872, 884, 892, 894), 100 to 103 hp (K9K 712, 728, 729, 732, 734), 106 and 110 hp (K9K 636, 648, 656, 836, 837, 846). The same quoted power output can correspond to different engine codes depending on the year of manufacture, and therefore to turbos with distinct references. The engine code stamped on the block — not the power output alone — is the only reliable guide for selecting the correct reference. The 1.6 dCi 130 (R9M, R9M409, R9M412), introduced on the Mégane IV, uses a different architecture from the K9K and is not interchangeable with it.

On the petrol side: the 1.2 TCe H5F, a turbo to watch on early production vehicles

The 1.2 TCe covers a wide power range — 100, 116, 130 and 132 hp — across codes H5F 400, 402, 403, 404, 405, 408, 410 and 412. Early versions (H5F 400, 402) experienced lubrication issues that affected turbo service life, often made worse by missed oil change intervals or degraded oil. The classic symptoms — whistling, blue smoke under acceleration, loss of power under load — typically indicate bearing failure or a loss of sealing. Before any replacement, it is essential to identify and address the root cause (fouling, oil pressure, air circuit) to prevent a rapid recurrence. The turbos in this range are sold new for the vast majority of engine variants, with the exception of the 1.5 dCi 106 (K9K), which is available as a reconditioned exchange unit.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Renault Mégane Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Renault Mégane Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
