On the A4, the turbo rarely fails without warning — but it always gives the same warning signs

Blue smoke on start-up, a high-pitched whine under load, gradual power loss or the car dropping into limp mode: the symptoms of a failing turbo on the A4 are well documented across all generations. The most common cause is not mechanical in origin — it is insufficient lubrication or degraded oil attacking the bearings, particularly on the 1.9 TDI and early 2.0 TDI engines where service intervals were sometimes stretched too far. On petrol units — 1.8 T, 2.0 TFSI — oil circuit contamination following a hot engine shutdown (no turbo timer fitted) is a classic cause of premature CHRA wear. Fitting a new turbo without addressing the root cause of the failure is simply scheduling another failure in the short term.

Diesel, petrol, bi-turbo: three distinct failure patterns

The 2.5 TDI (engine codes AFB, AKE, AKN, AYM, BAU, BCZ, BDG, BDH, BFC) and the 2.7 TDI (BPP, BSG, CANB, CAND, CAMA, CGKA) are known for sealing issues caused by EGR fouling, which overloads the turbo with deposits. The 3.0 TDI engines (codes CAPA, CCWA, CRTC, CRTD, DCPE, DHXA depending on power output) use a variable-geometry system whose actuator can seize, producing erratic turbo response before outright failure. On the petrol side, the 1.8 T (AEB, ANB, APU, AWT among others) can suffer from a wastegate that fails intermittently, resulting in occasional overboost. The RS4 with its 2.9 TFSI bi-turbo (engine code DECA) follows a different logic: failure of just one of the two turbos immediately upsets the load balance, accelerating the deterioration of the second.

Identify the exact reference before ordering

The A4 spans more than thirty years of production and a wide range of engines: from the 1.9 TD 75 hp (engine code AAZ) to the 2.0 TDI 204 hp mild hybrid (codes DFBA, DTPA), including the 1.4 TFSI (CVNA). The same engine capacity and the same quoted power output can correspond to different turbo references depending on the year of manufacture and the engine code stamped on the block. This is particularly the case with the 2.0 TDI, where several engine code families exist for identical power outputs. The manufacturer reference — for example 038145702N, 03L145701A or 06H145702E depending on the engine — is the only reliable identifier; it may be supplemented by equivalent references. All turbos listed here are new parts, sold with no old unit to return.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

The turbos on this page are new. Each product page states the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Audi A4 Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

No. The turbos on this page are new and sold as a straight sale: nothing to send back, your old turbo stays with you and there is one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Audi A4 Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
