On the diesel Master, engine capacity alone is not enough to identify the correct gearbox

The clearest example is the 2.5 dCi: depending on the engine code and production period, this engine can be fitted with a 5-speed manual, a 6-speed manual, or a Quickshift — three gearboxes that are incompatible with one another. The same logic applies to the 2.2 dCi and the 2.8 dCi, both of which also come with two different transmission types. Across all six engine variants covered (1.9, 2.2, 2.5, 2.8, 3.0 and 2.3 dCi, from 1998 to 2024), it is the engine codes — F9Q, ZD3, G9U, G9T, S9W or M9T — that determine the correct gearbox, not the engine capacity.

Quickshift: an automated gearbox in its own right

The Quickshift is a single-clutch automated manual gearbox, fitted to the 2.2, 2.5 and 2.8 dCi as well as the entire 2.3 dCi M9T range. It is supplied without the actuator or robot unit: this electrohydraulic component is excluded from the reconditioned unit. If your vehicle is fitted with a Quickshift, check the condition of the actuator separately before carrying out any work.

Key points to check by engine family

The G9U and G9T engines (3.0 dCi, codes G9U 720/724/750/754 and G9T 720/722/750) are exclusively paired with 6-speed manual gearboxes. The M9T for the 2.3 dCi covers seven variants (670, 680, 700, 702, 706, 710, 716) and is available with either a 6-speed manual or a Quickshift, depending on the exact variant. The F9Q for the 1.9 dCi, the first-generation engine, is only fitted with a 5-speed manual. Two service options are available depending on the condition of the vehicle and the unit in question: supply of a unit from stock, or a rebuild of your own gearbox, which is returned to you after reconditioning.
