New Beetle: light urban use, but 5-speed and 7-speed gearboxes that have nothing in common

The New Beetle established itself as a city car for moderate daily use, often driven on short journeys with frequent stops. This driving profile places little strain on the gearbox in terms of torque, but promotes premature wear of the synchronisers on the lower gears and, in the case of the DSG 7, accelerated deterioration of the dry dual-clutch. Across the engine variants covered from 2001 to 2019 — 1.4, 1.9 TDI, 1.6 TDI, 1.4 TSI, 1.2 TSI and 2.0 TDI — the associated gearbox changes radically depending on the engine and the year, making correct identification essential before placing any order.

5-speed or 6-speed manual: three engine variants, two distinct families

The naturally aspirated 1.4 and the 1.9 TDI are fitted exclusively with a 5-speed manual. The 1.6 TDI can also be paired with one, but depending on the engine code — CAYC or CJAA in particular — the associated gearbox differs. The TSI engines (1.2 TSI codes CBZB, CBZC; 1.4 TSI codes CAVD, CTHD, CTKA) are fitted with a 6-speed manual. These two families are not mechanically interchangeable: the casing, mounting points and axle ratios all differ. The engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable reference to avoid ordering the wrong unit.

Dry DSG 7: fitted to the 1.6 TDI and 2.0 TDI only, with dual-clutch included

The DSG 7 (DQ200) is fitted to certain 1.6 TDI and 2.0 TDI versions of the New Beetle. This dry dual-clutch gearbox is known for juddering at low urban speeds and dual-clutch wear that is proportional to city mileage. The reconditioned gearbox is supplied with a new dual-clutch, without the mechatronic unit — this electrohydraulic module should be checked separately. For the 2.0 TDI (codes CBEA, CJAA), a 6-speed manual is available as an alternative depending on the version. Two reconditioning options are available within this range: supply of a replacement unit or reconditioning of the customer's original unit.
