Iveco Daily Gearboxes, Engines and Turbos: How Have the 8140 and F1 Generations Transformed the Reconditioned Parts Market?

The answer comes down to two engine families separated by a pivotal date. Up to the mid-2000s, the Daily 35C and 70C were built around the 8140 (2.5 D, 2.8 TD, 2.8 TDI) with codes 8140.23, 8140.43 and their variants (8140.43B, 8140.43C, 8140.43S, 8140.43S.4000, 8140.43.2585, 8140.43.2600, 8140.23.3700…). From 2006–2007 onwards, Iveco switched to the F1A (2.3 D) and F1C (3.0 D) architectures, which cover the bulk of production through to 2019 and account for the majority of enquiries today. These two generations share neither gearbox nor turbo: confusing an 8140 with an F1A is a common identification mistake on 35C models produced during the transition period.

2.3 D and 3.0 D: the Same Engine Capacity Can Hide Several Engine Codes

On the 2.3 D, power output ranges from 95 to 156 hp depending on the year and emissions standard, giving rise to a large number of codes: F1AE0481F, F1AE0481G, F1AE0481R, F1AE0481U, F1AE3481A, F1AE3481B, F1AFL411B, F1AGL411G, F1AGL411J, F1AGL411L and others. A 2.3 D 106 hp and a 2.3 D 136 hp do not necessarily take the same turbo, even though the engine capacity is identical. On the 3.0 D, the same logic applies across the HPI, HPT and Multijet II variants (F1C, F1CE0481F, F1CE0481FA, F1CE0481HA, F1CE3481J, F1CFL411, F1CGL411C…). Before placing any order, the full engine code, readable on the block itself, is the only reliable criterion.

Three Part Families: Key Specifics to Know

The gearboxes make up the largest part of the range (5- and 6-speed manuals, available on an exchange basis or as a full rebuild). The turbos form the second family: they are offered new or reconditioned depending on the reference, with variable-geometry units on the more recent engines — a point worth checking against the vehicle's exact model year. The engines are supplied as bare engines; ancillary components (injectors, turbo, alternator) are not included and must be transferred from the old unit. The range covers the years 1999 to 2019 on the 35C, Daily and 70C models, all with diesel engines.
