Mercedes turbos for OM 611 to OM 651 and M270 to M276 engines: always read the engine code before ordering

On both diesel and petrol Mercedes models, the engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable way to identify the correct turbo. The same model — the Classe E or Sprinter, for example — may have been fitted with several different turbo families depending on the engine generation, and the associated manufacturer references are not interchangeable. The OM 646 blocks cover several variants (OM 646.951, .961, .962, .963, .966, .980, .981, .982, .986) fitted to 220 CDI models with different power outputs — 136, 150 or 170 hp — depending on the period and model. The OM 611.962 belongs to an earlier generation of the 270 CDI and is incompatible with OM 646 turbos. The OM 651.930 is the more recent-generation 220 CDI 150 hp block, with its own turbo reference (VV19 / 6460900780 family and equivalents). Mixing up these families will invariably result in the part being returned.

Petrol: two families — M270 and M276 — with distinct geometry and architecture

On the petrol side, the distinction between the M270 (codes M270.910, M270.920, M270.921) and M276 (M276.820, M276.823) families is structural: the M270 is a single-turbo four-cylinder fitted to the Classe A, B, CLA and GLA 160 to 200; the M276 is a 3.0 twin-turbo V6 powering the AMG 43 variants (C 43, GLC 43) and certain high-spec Classe E, CLS and ML models. The turbo references associated with these two families (9V104 / 9V106 for the M270, 9V119 / 9V120 / AL0075 for the M276) share no common parts. On the twin-turbo M276, two turbos are fitted in parallel: check whether one or both are faulty before ordering.

Common symptoms and key checks before replacement

On the variable-geometry OM 646 and OM 651 diesel units, the most frequent symptoms are a gradual loss of power, a whistling noise under acceleration, blue or black smoke, and the vehicle entering limp mode. These signs often point to a clogged variable-geometry actuator or inadequate lubrication — degraded oil or a blocked oil feed pipe — rather than an internal mechanical failure of the turbo itself. On the M270 and M271 petrol blocks (M271.820, M271.860, M271.861), a blocked oil circuit remains the leading cause of bearing failure. Addressing the root cause before fitting a new or reconditioned turbo is essential: replacing the turbo without diagnosing the underlying fault will lead to a second failure in the same timeframe. The range covers nineteen Mercedes models — from the Citan to the Sprinter, including the Classe A through to S and the Vito and Viano light commercials — with turbos available new or reconditioned depending on the reference.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Mercedes.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Mercedes?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
