17 Audi models, from the small 1.2 TFSI to the 3.0 TDI V6: each with its own distinct turbo to match its use

An A1 1.2 TFSI covers most of its mileage in town, at low revs, with short, repeated heat cycles. A Q7 3.0 TDI quattro pulls on the motorway, sometimes towing a trailer. A TT 2.0 TFSI is pushed to high revs in spirited driving. These different usage profiles place very different demands on the turbo: cold-start lubrication, oil quality, inlet tract fouling and DPF condition all behave differently depending on the driving cycle. Identifying the correct manufacturer reference is therefore the first step — but understanding why the turbo failed is another, and an essential one before any replacement is carried out.

Diesel and petrol: very different turbo architectures depending on engine capacity

On the 1.9 TDI and 2.0 TDI (engine codes AVF, AWX, BLB, BPW, BKD, AZV among others), variable-geometry turbos are standard: the exhaust vane actuators seize frequently on vehicles that have accumulated short urban cycles, especially when engine oil has not been changed at strict intervals. On the 3.0 TDI V6 (engine codes ASB, BKN, BKS, BMK, BNG, CRTD among others), the high power and torque outputs demand a suitably sized turbo; an oil circuit seal failure or an air leak on the inlet side are the most common causes of damage. On the petrol side, the 1.8 T (engine codes AEB, ANB, APU, AJQ, AUQ among others) and the 2.0 TFSI span a very wide range of generations across the A3, A4, TT and Q3: the same engine capacity can carry different manufacturer references depending on the year of production and the exact engine code.

The pitfall of identifying parts from the Audi catalogue

The 2.0 TFSI is a perfect illustration of the problem: depending on whether the engine code is CAEB, CDNB, CAEA (180 to 220 hp) or CJXA, CJXB, CJXC (280 to 310 hp), the manufacturer references for the turbo are entirely different. Likewise, a 3.0 TDI in an A6, Q5 or Q7 can cover outputs from 211 to 272 hp depending on the generation, with distinct engine codes and turbos. The engine code, stamped on the block and visible in the vehicle's documents, is the only reliable criterion for selecting the correct reference. Common symptoms — whistling at certain revs, blue smoke under acceleration, a marked loss of power or the vehicle entering limp mode — point to a turbo failure, but give no indication of its cause: degraded oil, a blocked particulate filter or a faulty seal can produce identical symptoms across very different engines. Addressing the root cause before replacement remains essential to avoid a repeat failure. The turbos listed on this page are new turbos, sold as a straightforward purchase, with no old unit to return.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Audi.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Audi?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
