Two decades, two engine families: the diesel Transit from 2000 to 2023 didn't share the same engine throughout

Between 2000 and 2023, the Transit went through several architectural generations that fundamentally transformed its engine range. The 1.8 TDCi and 2.4 TDCi units cover the 2000–2014 period, with a Duratorq architecture born from a Ford-PSA collaboration. From 2006, the 2.2 TDCi took over as the core engine, with 31 distinct engine codes — the highest volume in this catalogue — reflecting both the length of production and the sheer number of power outputs and body variants. Then came the shift to EcoBlue architectures from 2016 onwards: the 2.0 EcoBlue and, later, the 1.5 EcoBlue, which meet emissions standards and follow a downsizing logic entirely absent from earlier generations.

1.5 or 2.0: two EcoBlue capacities designed for different applications

The 1.5 TDCi (2015–2023, 6 engine codes) and the 1.5 EcoBlue (2 engine codes) are fitted to the shorter, lightly loaded versions of the Transit. Their block is not interchangeable with that of the 2.0 EcoBlue, which covers higher payload configurations and accounts for 11 engine codes across the 2016–2023 period. Mixing up the two families when identifying the engine is the most common mistake on recent Transits: the engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable reference, regardless of the stated engine capacity.

2.2 TDCi and 2.4 TDCi: documented weaknesses linked to heavy use

The 2.4 TDCi is well known for cylinder head and crankshaft failures in high-demand applications. The 2.2 TDCi, used as a heavy-duty van engine on repeated short cycles, exhibits documented premature wear of cylinder liners and con-rod bearings across several engine codes, notably CYFB, DRFF and CVFF. The 1.8 TDCi, with 11 engine codes between 2002 and 2013, covers a transitional period during which Ford multiplied power variants without radically altering the base architecture — which complicates identification but simplifies internal mechanical compatibility.
