Passat diesel in 5-speed manual, diesel in DSG, petrol in 7-speed DSG: three distinct transmission architectures

Across the Passat range covering 1996–2015, the transmission is far from uniform: the choice between a manual gearbox and a dual-clutch gearbox depends as much on the engine as on the generation. The 1.9 TDI (codes AVB, AWX, AVF, BKC, BXE) is fitted with either a 5-speed or 6-speed manual depending on the year and power output. The 2.0 TDI (BKP, CBAB, CFFB, CFGB…) comes in two contrasting configurations: 6-speed manual or 6-speed DSG. On the petrol side, the 1.8 TSI (CDAA, CDAB, CJEB) is available exclusively with the 7-speed DSG, whereas the 1.4 TSI (CAXA, CXXB, DFGA) retains a 6-speed manual. The 2.5 TDI and the 1.6 round out the range with a 6-speed manual, while the 1.6 TDI (CAYC, CDGA) can also be paired with either a 7-speed DSG or a 5-speed manual.

DSG 6 and DSG 7: two dual-clutch gearboxes with no mechanical parts in common

The DSG 6 (DQ250) is a wet-clutch gearbox paired with the 2.0 TDI; the DSG 7 (DQ200) is a dry-clutch unit, lighter in design, found on the 1.8 TSI and the 1.6 TDI. The two families share no interchangeable parts whatsoever. The dry-clutch DSG 7 is well known for juddering at low speeds in urban driving on early versions, a fault often attributed to the mechatronic unit — which is not included with the reconditioned gearbox, as is also the case with the DSG 6. The dual-clutch assembly itself, however, is included as new.

Identify the correct gearbox by engine code, not just by engine capacity

The same 2.0 TDI can carry different engine codes (BKP or CBAB, for example) and correspond to mechanically distinct gearboxes. The engine code stamped on the block is the essential starting point for identifying the exact reference. With the 1.9 TDI, the coexistence of 5-speed and 6-speed manuals across codes AVF, BKC and BXE calls for the same care: the year of manufacture alone is not enough to determine which gearbox applies.

    Frequently asked questions

Is a gearbox for this Volkswagen model in stock?

We currently list 28 references reconditioned for this model. Availability depends on the exact engine: enter your number plate to confirm stock in real time, or request an online quote.

How can I be sure it is compatible with my Volkswagen?

Compatibility depends on the engine / gearbox code, not just the model. The most reliable way is your number plate or registration document: our advisers confirm the right gearbox for your vehicle before you order.

Do I need to send back my old unit?

Yes, that is the principle of an exchange unit: you return your old gearbox (the core), which we recondition in turn. We arrange transport both ways, so you don't have to handle any logistics.

How long does it take to receive the gearbox for my Volkswagen?

Once compatibility is confirmed and depending on the availability of the reference, the part leaves our workshop ready to fit, delivered throughout France and Europe, with payment in instalments available (up to 10 payments).
