Skoda Turbos: from the AFB and AKN codes of the early Octavia TDI to the CZDA and CZEA of today's TSI generations

The shift between older engine generations and more recent units radically changes the situation when it comes to the turbo: on the AFB, AKN, AYM, AKE, BAU engines — the 1.9 TDI and 2.5 TDI fitted to the Superb and early Octavia — the corresponding housings and variable geometries are harder to come by; a reconditioned turbo on an exchange basis may be the only readily available option, or rebuilding the original unit may be worthwhile in its own right if the housing is in good condition. On more recent units such as the CZDA, CZEA, CKFC, DFFA (2.0 TDI 150, 1.4 TSI 140-150, 1.2 TSI), a new turbo is available for outright sale with no old unit to return.

Diesel or petrol: two very different identification approaches

On the diesel side, the range covers seven models — Octavia, Superb, Fabia, Roomster, Yeti, Karoq, Rapid — with engines ranging from the 1.4 TDI 70 hp to the 2.5 TDI 163 hp. The same engine capacity can take very different variable-geometry turbos depending on the engine code: the 1.9 TDI 105 (BKD) is not interchangeable with the 1.9 TDI 110 (AKE) or the 1.9 TDI 130 (AZV). The manufacturer's reference stamped on the turbo — for example 038145702G, 03G253014H or 724930-5012S — takes precedence over the power output stated in commercial documentation. On the petrol side, the 1.2 TSI (CBZA, CBZB, CBZC) and 1.4 TSI (CHPA, CHPB, CPTA) carry distinct fixed-geometry turbos, with references from the 03F145701 and 04E145701-04E145703 series that vary according to the exact variant of the block.

Symptoms, causes and precautions before fitting

On variable-geometry TDI units (wastegate or pneumatic/electronic actuator), common symptoms include a gradual loss of power, a whistling noise under acceleration, or blue smoke when the engine is warm. Degraded oil contaminating the oil circuit and deposits caused by a blocked diesel particulate filter are the most frequent causes of bearing failure and CHRA seal damage. Addressing the root cause before fitting the replacement turbo is essential: a new turbo fitted without flushing the oil circuit or checking the feed lines will fail for exactly the same reasons.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Skoda.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Skoda?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
