Reconditioned Jeep Gearbox

Off-roading and towing put the Jeep gearbox under far greater strain than ordinary road use

A Wrangler used off-road, a Cherokee regularly towing a trailer, or a Patriot racking up the miles on rough roads does not place the same demands on its transmission as a city saloon. The manual gearboxes fitted to these vehicles — 5 or 6 speeds depending on the model and engine — absorb traction forces, gear changes under load, and high oil temperatures that more sedate driving simply does not generate. When a failure occurs, the replacement must take these operating conditions into account, not just the engine capacity.

Wrangler, Cherokee, Compass, Patriot: very different gearbox architectures depending on the engine

The Wrangler accounts for the bulk of the range, with gearboxes covering the 2.8 CRD, 4.0 PowerTech and 2.5 AMC engines across a span from 2001 to 2018. These engines do not share the same gearbox: the 4.0 petrol (code AMC 242 / PowerTech) uses a specific transmission, as does the 2.8 CRD diesel (codes BYL, ECE). Using a cross-reference without checking the engine code and year is the most common source of error on this model. The Cherokee and Compass in 2.0 CRD (codes ENR, ENS) have their own gearboxes, distinct from those of the Wrangler even when the diesel capacity is similar. The Patriot, covered by a single reference, cannot be substituted with any other model in the range.

Identifying the right part for a Jeep: engine code and VIN first

On Jeep vehicles from this period, the production year and engine alone are not enough to identify the gearbox: the engine code stamped on the block — AMC 150, BYL, ECE, ENR, ENS, PowerTech 4.0 — and the VIN position are the only reliable data for avoiding a reference error. All gearboxes available here are manuals (5 or 6 speeds); no automatic or automated manual gearbox is offered in this collection. Two purchasing options are available depending on the reference: exchange and rebuilding your own unit, the latter being offered when the customer's original part can be reconditioned and returned in identical specification.
