Five Lancia models, three gearbox families: how the choice of sales method depends first and foremost on parts availability

Across the Lancia range covered here — Ypsilon, Musa, Lybra, Thesis and Delta — gearboxes fall into three families: 5-speed manual, 6-speed manual, and the DFN (Dualogic automated manual gearbox, sold without its actuator). On a brand with limited sales volumes in France, this variety has a direct consequence: some reconditioned exchange gearboxes are readily available, while others — from low-volume models such as the Thesis 2.4 JTD or the Lybra — are harder to source. It is precisely in these cases that rebuilding the customer's own unit can become the most appropriate solution — not as a last resort, but because the original mechanical core is often still in a workable condition.

Ypsilon and Musa: watch out for petrol engine codes

The Ypsilon and Musa account for the majority of available references. On both models, the petrol engine is based on several variants of the 1.4 FIRE unit: the 350A1000 (1.4 8V) and the 843A1000 (1.4 16V) do not share the same gearbox. The 1.2, often incorrectly cited for the Musa, was never fitted to that model in petrol form; it belongs to the Lancia Ypsilon and the Fiat Idea (engine codes 188A5000 or 188A9000). Mixing up these units when placing an order will invariably result in a fitment incompatibility. On Multijet versions (1.3 and 1.6), the codes 199A2000, 199A3000 and 198A2000 identify mechanically different gearboxes despite a similar engine capacity.

Thesis and Lybra: gearboxes outside the standard range

The Thesis (2001–2009) with its 2.4 JTD and the Lybra are special cases: the limited production numbers of these models make replacement gearboxes scarcer on both the second-hand and reconditioned markets. The production period spans 1999 à 2021 across the entire Lancia range covered here, which means specifications evolved across model years — even with the same engine. Checking the engine code stamped on the block before taking any further steps remains the only reliable starting point for these models.
