Three engine codes for the same 1.6 HDi Partner: 9HW, 9HX and 9HP do not take the same gearbox

On the Partner 1.6 HDi (2005–2018), engine capacity tells you nothing. It is the engine codes stamped on the block — 9HW (DV6BTED4), 9HX (DV6ATED4) and 9HP (DV6DTED) — that determine which gearbox fits. These three variants of the DV6 block correspond to different power outputs and generations, and the casings, gear ratios and mountings are not always interchangeable between families. Mixing up a 9HX with a 9HP when ordering risks ending up with a unit that is mismatched to the torque range of the engine received.

5-speed manual, 6-speed manual or ETG6: three transmission architectures across this same range

Depending on the year and version, the Partner 1.6 HDi was fitted with three distinct transmission families. The 5-speed manual was fitted to the earliest versions (from 2005), the 6-speed manual to the more powerful or later variants, and the ETG6 (6-speed automated manual gearbox) to certain trim levels of the Partner Tepee and the facelifted Partner van. The ETG6 is supplied without the electrohydraulic actuator: it is the mechanical gearbox alone that is reconditioned, with the actuator diagnosed and dealt with separately by the customer's workshop.

Known weak points on this generation of DV6 block

The DV6 in its 9HW and 9HX variants is associated with EGR valve problems and carbon build-up, which place greater strain on the transmission (juddering, over-revving). In a loaded van, the 5-speed gearbox is subjected to stresses well beyond those of private use, which accelerates wear on the 3rd and 4th gear synchronisers. Checking the engine code on the manufacturer's plate before placing any order remains essential in order to select the correct reference from the ten available in this collection.
