From compact city cars to diesel SUVs: how Kia usage patterns affect gearbox choice between 2001 and 2023

A Sportage used on mixed urban and suburban routes does not put the same demands on its gearbox as a Carnival running at maximum load or a Picanto confined to city driving. Over twenty-two years of production, the Kia range has covered a very wide variety of usage profiles, and that is precisely what makes identifying the right gearbox so tricky: the same model has been fitted with different gearboxes depending on the year, engine and market. Before 2010, diesel units were still dominated by the 2.0 CRDi (D4EA, D4HA) and the 2.9 CRDi (J3) on SUVs and MPVs; from 2011–2012 onwards, the 1.7 CRDi (D4FD, D4FDL) and the 1.6 CRDi (D4FB, D4FE) were progressively fitted to the Ceed, Rio, Venga and Sportage, with 5- or 6-speed manual gearboxes that are not interchangeable.

Sportage, Ceed, Venga, Rio: the pitfalls of identification by engine

The Sportage alone accounts for the majority of references in the catalogue, across all engine variants. The engine code is the only reliable criterion: two vehicles from the same model year with the same engine capacity can carry incompatible gearboxes if their codes differ. On the 1.6 petrol, the codes G4FC (1.6 CVVT), G4FD (1.6 GDI) and G4FG coexist — three codes, three potential gearbox variants. On the 1.0, the codes G3LC and G4HE (1.0 naturally aspirated) coexist with G3LC and G3LE on the 1.0 T-GDI: G3LC appears in both families, which means the exact sub-type must be verified before placing any order. The 1.2 (G4LA) is fitted notably to the Picanto and Stonic in certain years, with a 5-speed manual gearbox that is distinct from the 1.4 versions (G4FA).

Two purchasing options depending on the condition of your original unit

The reconditioned Kia gearboxes in this catalogue are available on an exchange basis or as a rebuild of your own unit, subject to availability by reference. Rebuilding your own gearbox is the solution for cases where the reference is rare or where the customer wishes to get their original unit back — typically on older Carnival 2.9 CRDi models or Carens fitted with less common gearboxes. All references cover the period 2001-2023, from the early Sportage and Carnival generations through to the recent Stonic and Pro Ceed.

    Frequently asked questions

How much does a reconditioned Kia gearbox cost?

The price depends on the engine and the exact reference, and is always well below the price of a new part. For an exact price for your vehicle, enter your number plate or request a free online quote.

Is this Kia gearbox compatible with my exact model?

We offer 29 references covering the main Kia models. Compatibility is checked against the engine / gearbox code: give us your number plate and we will confirm the exact gearbox for your vehicle.

What is the difference between new, used and exchange?

A used part is resold as is, with no work done. An exchange unit is an original gearbox reconditioned in our workshop, inspected and guaranteed for up to 24 months: reliability close to new, at a used-part price.

What do the warranty and delivery include?

A warranty of up to 24 months, an invoice with every part, return transport arranged for collecting your old unit, delivery throughout Europe and payment in up to 10 instalments.
