Mercedes Gearboxes: 3 Engine Families with Very Different Failure Patterns

Across the Mercedes models covered here — from the Sprinter to the SLK, and the A-Class to the E-Class — gearbox failures tend to follow fairly predictable patterns depending on the engine. The OM646 and OM651, widely used in the C-Class, Vito and Sprinter in 2.2 CDI and 2.0 CDI form, are well known for synchroniser problems on the higher gears, typically revealed by stiff or noisy gear changes when cold. The OM607 (based on the Renault K9K), fitted to the Citan 1.5 dCi, shares the K9K family's known weaknesses with selector forks, causing judder in 2nd and 3rd gear. On the petrol side, the M271 (1.8 Kompressor, C-Class and SLK) and M266 (A/B-Class) suffer from more gradual bush and differential wear — but the end result is the same: a gearbox that is beyond use and requires a complete replacement.

Identification: the Pitfall of Mercedes Engine Codes

Mercedes uses a precise engine code naming convention — OM for diesels, M for petrols — but the same model can accept several closely related variants. On the Sprinter, for example, the 2.9 CDI is based on the older OM 601 (from 1988 onwards), while later generations switched to the OM611 and then the OM646: three different engines, three distinct gearboxes, which are frequently confused at the point of purchase. On the A-Class, the M266 comes in OM640.940, OM640.941 and OM640.942 variants depending on engine capacity and year, with bellhousings that are not interchangeable. The engine code stamped on the block therefore remains the essential identifier — far more reliable than the year or trim level.

5- or 6-Speed Manual: What This Range Covers

All the reconditioned Mercedes gearboxes listed here are manual units, in 5- or 6-speed form, covering diesel engines from 1.5 to 3.0 CDI and petrol engines from 1.5 to 2.2, spanning the years 1988 to 2021. Vans (Sprinter, Vito, Citan) and saloons (A, B, C and E-Class) do not share the same gearboxes, even when they use the same engine: an OM651 from a Vito and an OM651 from a C-Class have different casings. Rebuilding your own unit is also available alongside the standard exchange option for the more specific references — particularly useful for older-generation Sprinters or the MB100, where exchange units are hard to come by.
