From the 2.0 HDi of the 2000s to today's 1.5 BlueHDi: why the same 1.6 HDi can take incompatible turbos depending on the model year

Across the Peugeot range, the most common pitfall when identifying a turbo is not the engine capacity but the engine code. The 1.6 HDi is the clearest example: the codes DV6ATED4, DV6B, DV6UTED4 correspond to the first-generation 75 and 90 hp variants, whilst the codes 9HS, 9HV, 9HY, 9HZ are fitted to the 90 and 110 hp versions of a later generation — and these two families do not share the same turbo references, even at identical power outputs. The code stamped on the engine therefore remains the only reliable starting point, before any other data is considered.

Diesel: three generations of blocks, three turbo logics

The first-generation 2.0 HDi engines (codes DW10TD, RHY for the 90 hp; RHS, RHZ for the 110 hp; DW10BTED4, DW10CTED4, RHH for the 130 and 163 hp) are found in the 306, 307, 406, 407, Expert and Boxer. The 2.8 HDi (codes S9W700, S9W702) covers the 807 and a number of light commercial vehicles with a specific variable geometry. The move to the 1.5 BlueHDi marks a clear break: the codes DV5RCF, DV5RD, DV5RE (208, 308, 2008, Rifter, Partner) and YHW, YHY are in no way interchangeable with the older 1.6 HDi units, despite sharing a common diesel architecture. On all these variable-geometry engines, a gradual build-up of deposits on the vanes — often caused by degraded oil or a blocked EGR circuit — is one of the most well-documented causes of failure: whistling when cold, loss of power under load and black smoke are warning signs that should not be ignored. Identifying and correcting the root cause of the problem is essential before any replacement is carried out.

Petrol THP and PureTech: two families not to be confused

The 1.6 THP (codes EP6CDT, EP6CDTM, EP6FDT, available in outputs from 150 to 165 hp across the 207, 308, 3008 and 5008) uses a fixed-geometry turbo with a wastegate. The 200 hp version (code EP6CDTX) takes a different reference. The 1.2 PureTech that succeeded it on the 208, 308 and 2008 (codes HNP, HNS, HNV, HNY, HNZ, from 110 to 131 hp) uses a turbo of a distinct architecture; several codes coexist for similar power outputs, and the exact reference depends on the vehicle's model year. On these petrol engines, adhering to the manufacturer's oil change intervals directly affects the service life of the turbo bearings, which run dry for a few seconds at every start-up. All the turbos listed on this page are new parts, sold without exchange, covering nineteen Peugeot models from the 107 to the Boxer.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Peugeot.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Peugeot?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
