From 9HZ to 9HR: when the 5008 1.6 HDi moved from a conventional manual to a BMP6 automated gearbox

Between 2009 and 2017, the 5008 1.6 HDi was fitted with two clearly distinct transmission types depending on the engine generation. In the early years, with the 9HZ (DV6TED4) code, the gearbox is a conventional 6-speed manual. Once PSA introduced the 9HR and 9HC (DV6C) codes, a BMP6 automated gearbox was added to the range — or replaced the manual entirely, depending on the market and trim level. Both families share the same stated engine capacity, but no components are common between them.

What the BMP6 changes in practice

The BMP6 is an automated gearbox with an electro-hydraulic actuator: mechanically close to a manual, it has neither a clutch pedal nor a torque-converter automatic system. Its failure symptoms therefore differ from those of a conventional manual gearbox — juddering in town, refused gear changes, slipping — and are often linked to the actuator rather than the gear trains. The reconditioned gearbox is supplied without the actuator module, as this electronic component is dealt with separately. For the 9HZ manual, the available references cover the entire relevant production period, with codes such as 20DS85 or 20EA06 to 20EA60 depending on the ratio and exact year.
