Four decades of Volkswagen gearboxes: DSG, manuals and the faults that make replacement unavoidable

From 1981 to 2024, across 23 models ranging from the Golf to the Transporter, via the Scirocco and the Tiguan, Volkswagen has deployed several transmission families whose weak points are now well documented. The dry-clutch DSG 7 (DQ200), fitted to the 1.2 TSI, 1.4 TSI and 1.4 TDI engines in particular, is known for juddering during low-speed manoeuvres, hesitant pull-away and cold gear-change lurches — symptoms that worsen as the dual-clutch and mechatronic unit wear. The wet-clutch DSG 6 (DQ250), more robust, is fitted to 2.0 TDI and 2.0 TSI units; its failures tend to show up as low-speed vibrations or slip under load. On the manual side, the 5- and 6-speed gearboxes fitted to 1.9 TDI and 2.0 TDI engines can suffer from worn synchromesh rings (difficult 2nd or 3rd gear changes) or noisy input shaft bearings, particularly at the high mileages typical of the Transporter and Caddy.

Identifying the right part: engine code takes priority over engine capacity

The same model with the same engine capacity can receive entirely different gearboxes from one year to the next. On the Golf 1.4 TSI, for example, engine code BMY or BLG points to a DSG 6, whereas CAXA or CPTA corresponds to a DSG 7. On the 2.0 TDI, codes CAAA, CAAB, CAAC or CFCA determine which gearbox generation is compatible. The engine code — stamped on the block and shown on the V5C under entry P5 — is the only reliable reference; engine capacity and year alone are not sufficient.

Reconditioned DSG: what is included with the unit

Volkswagen DSG gearboxes available on an exchange basis are supplied with a new dual-clutch, without mechatronic unit. This is a crucial point: if the diagnosis has isolated a mechatronic unit fault alone, the gearbox itself is not at fault. Conversely, if internal mechanical wear has been confirmed — synchromesh rings, differential, bearings — a full replacement with a reconditioned gearbox is the appropriate solution. Manual gearboxes are available on an exchange basis or as a rebuild of your own unit, depending on the model and engine.
