Six Mitsubishi models, eleven engine codes: what off-road and commercial use demands of the gearbox

The L200 heads to building sites, the Pajero tackles rutted tracks, the Outlander carries families and tows on the motorway, and the Canter absorbs daily loads in urban environments: each of these uses puts different demands on the gearbox. A diesel pick-up working under constant load wears its synchromesh rings far faster than a city saloon, and a petrol-hybrid SUV such as the ASX 1.5 Turbo (4G15T) has absolutely nothing in common mechanically with a Pajero 3.2 DI-D (4M41). Understanding what a vehicle does day in, day out is already understanding why the gearbox fails — and why a replacement is never simply a matter of finding a reconditioned unit of the right size.

L200 and Pajero: the engine code trap with 4D56 / 4D56T, 4M41 and 4M42

The L200 alone accounts for the majority of configurations in this range. Depending on the model year between 2000 and 2021, it was fitted with the 4D56, 4D56T, 4N14 and 4N15 diesel engines — 2.5 DI-D or 2.4 DI-D — paired with 5- or 6-speed manual gearboxes that are not interchangeable between generations. The Pajero, for its part, covers the 4M41 (3.2 DI-D) and 4M42 (3.0 DI-D) families — two entirely different architectures. Confusing a 4M41 with a 4M42 on the basis of a similar engine capacity is a common mistake: the associated gearbox, mounting dimensions and gear ratios all differ. For the Outlander, the codes 4N13 (1.8 DI-D) and 4N14 (2.2 DI-D) coexist across closely related model years; only the engine code stamped on the block allows you to identify the correct unit without any ambiguity.

Canter and Colt: two special cases in the Mitsubishi range

The Canter light commercial vehicle is fitted with the 4HN (DW12MTED4) — an engine developed in partnership with PSA — and its gearbox shares nothing with the rest of the Mitsubishi range. The Colt sits at the opposite end of the spectrum: a light city car used in urban conditions, its gearbox suffers primarily from the wear of frequent clutch engagement in town rather than from the mechanical stresses associated with heavy loads. For both of these models, as with all the others, two purchasing options are available: exchange basis and rebuilding the customer's own unit — a technical distinction that determines the correct reference to order and the lead time to expect.
