Suzuki Gearboxes: exclusively manual transmissions from 1998 to 2018

Across the full Suzuki range covered here — Swift, Jimny, Vitara, SX4, Ignis, Splash, Alto, Grand Vitara, Samurai and Carry — every gearbox available is manual, with 5 or 6 speeds depending on the model and engine. There are no torque-converter automatics, no automated manual gearboxes and no dual-clutch units within this range: the manual vs. automatic question simply does not arise here as it might with other manufacturers. What does matter, however, is the variety of engine families paired with these transmissions, and the identification pitfalls that come with it.

Petrol and diesel: distinct gearbox families

On the petrol side, the most common engine codes are the M13A, K10B, K12B, K12C, G13B, G13BB and M16A. On the diesel side, the DDiS units — D13A, D16AA, D19AA, D20AA, F9Q and F9QB — use different gearboxes that are not interchangeable with petrol versions of a similar engine capacity. A 1.3 petrol (M13A) and a 1.3 DDiS (D13A) do not take the same transmission: the engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable reference to avoid any mix-up.

Identifying the right gearbox by model and generation

The Swift alone spans several generations between 1998 and 2018, with engine changes that mean different gearboxes from one generation to the next — even where engine capacity remains the same. The Jimny, produced over a long period and notably fitted with the M13A, has fewer variants but has its own mechanical characteristics specific to its 4×4 purpose. The SX4 and Grand Vitara in DDiS form (1.6 DDiS, 1.9 DDiS, 2.0 DDiS) require particular care: these diesel versions are often fitted to four-wheel-drive vehicles, which can affect the type of gearbox and its torque output configuration.
