Volvo Gearboxes: D4162T or D5244T, 5- or 6-Speed Manual — the Engine Code Makes the Difference

On a Volvo, it is the engine code stamped on the casing — not the engine capacity alone — that determines which gearbox is compatible. A 2.0 diesel can carry the code D4204T4 or D4204T14 depending on the variant and year, and these two codes do not take the same gearbox. Likewise, the 1.6 diesel covers both the D4162T (S40, V50, C30, V40 up to 2016) and the B4164S3 or B4164T3 on the petrol side — distinct families, distinct gearboxes. Checking the code before placing any order is the only way to avoid a reference error.

Five or six speeds: what the engine code reveals

The manual gearboxes listed here cover two architectures. The D5244T, D5244T4, D5244T5, D5244T15 and D5244T18 units — 2.4 D5 engines fitted to the XC70, XC90 and V60 — take 6-speed manual gearboxes, suited to the higher torque outputs of these five-cylinder blocks. At the other end of the range, the compact 1.6 and 1.8 units (codes B4184S11, B4164S3, D4162T) fitted to the S40, V50 and C30 from 2001 to 2012 are paired with 5-speed gearboxes. The Drive-E 2.0 T4 (B4204T, including the B4204T47 variant) introduced from 2012 on the V40 and XC60 takes a 6-speed gearbox specific to this generation of four-cylinder blocks — not interchangeable with the 6-speed units from the D5244T.

Key points to watch by model

The V40 alone accounts for nine references in this collection, reflecting the breadth of its engine range between 2012 and 2016. The V50 and C30 share several gearboxes from the same 1.6 block families, but production years create casing variants and final-drive differences: two V50s of the same engine capacity built in different years may require different references. For the XC60 and XC90 in 2.4 D5, the exact variant of the D5244T code (T, T4, T5, T15 or T18) determines the choice between several reconditioned 6-speed gearboxes available on an exchange basis or as a rebuild of the customer's original unit, depending on the condition of the part returned.
