Citroën Turbos: from DW10TD and 9HJ to EB2DT and DV5RC – thirty years of engines in a single catalogue

Before identifying the correct reference, you need to read the engine code stamped on the block — not the engine capacity listed in the catalogue. The same 1.6 HDi can carry the codes DV6ATED4, DV6B, 9HJ, 9HP, 9HS, 9HY or 9HZ depending on the generation and power output: these codes do not correspond to the same turbo. In the same way, the 2.0 HDi comes in RHY/DW10TD (90 hp, fixed geometry) and in RHM, RHT, RHZ (107 to 110 hp, variable-geometry turbo), then in RHH, RHE, AHR for the 150 to 163 hp variants. Power output alone is not enough to identify the right part: only the engine code guarantees the correct match.

Diesel: from 1.4 HDi to 2.2 HDi – engine families and their turbos

The DV4TD block (1.4 HDi 54 hp, code 8HT) and the DV6 (1.6 HDi, codes DV6ATED4, DV6B, DV6C, DV6TED4) are fitted to the C2, C3, C4 and Berlingo of the first generations. The 1.5 BlueHDi, introduced later, covers the codes DV5RD, DV5RE, DV5RCF, YH01, YHY, YHR, YHS, YHV, YHX, YHZ depending on power output (75, 100, 102, 110, 130 or 131 hp) and model year — a common pitfall on recent C3, C4 Cactus and Berlingo models. The 2.2 HDi (C5, C8, Jumper) carries the codes 4HU, 4HV for the 100 to 130 hp versions, and 4HX, DW12TED4, DW12TED4S for the 128 to 136 hp versions: two distinct turbo families despite an identical engine capacity. The 1.8 HDi 150 hp is based on the codes 4N13 or 6HZ, found in particular on the first-generation C5.

On variable-geometry turbos (the majority of HDi and BlueHDi units from 90 hp upwards), the most common symptoms are black or blue smoke under acceleration, an abnormal whistling noise and the engine entering limp-home mode. Oil circuit contamination and insufficient lubrication at start-up remain the leading causes of turbo failure on these engines. Addressing the root cause before fitting a replacement is essential: a new turbo fitted to a degraded oil circuit will not last.

Petrol: 1.2 PureTech and THP – use the engine code to avoid confusion

The 1.2 turbo petrol engine covers two closely related but distinct families. The codes EB2DT, EB2DTS, EB2ADT, EB2ADTS cover the THP 110/130 and the early PureTech versions; the codes HNP, HNS, HNV, HNY, HNZ correspond to the more recent PureTech 110 and 130, fitted to the C3, DS3, C4 Cactus and DS4. These two families do not share the same turbo references. The 1.6 THP (codes EP6DT, EP6FDT, 5FR, 5FV) is fitted to the sportier C4, DS3 and DS4 models (150 to 165 hp); on these blocks, oil seal leaks on the turbo and carbon build-up in the fuel supply circuit are well-known weaknesses. All turbos listed here are new and sold as standard parts (no exchange).

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Citroën.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Citroën?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
