Diesel K9K or petrol TCe: two engine families with opposing philosophies on Dacia models

Dacia engines span two distinct worlds. On the diesel side, the 1.5 dCi — K9K family — has been fitted to virtually the entire range since 2004: Duster, Logan, Sandero, Lodgy, Dokker. On the petrol side, three TCe families have succeeded one another or coexisted depending on the year and model: the 0.9 TCe three-cylinder (H4B), the 1.2 TCe (H5F) and the 1.3 TCe (H5H), the latter introduced as a gradual replacement for the 1.2 from 2019 onwards. The same commercial designation can therefore refer to mechanically different engines depending on the year of manufacture.

K9K: a long-lived family, but with numerous variants

The K9K is the most widespread engine in the Dacia range, and also the one with the greatest number of variants. Notable engine codes include K9K 612, 714, 716, 724, 792, 796, 802, 808, 820, 856, 892, 896 — each corresponding to a specific power output, emissions standard or model configuration. A K9K from a 4x4 Duster is not interchangeable with one from a Logan of the same engine capacity: checking the engine code stamped on the block is essential before placing any order. The well-documented weak point of certain K9K units is the timing system's sensitivity to degraded oil, with direct consequences for the high-pressure pump and the turbo.

H5F and H5H: two petrol generations, one reason to check the codes carefully

The 1.2 TCe H5F also comes in several codes (H5F-403, 404, 408, 409, 410, 412) depending on power output and the applicable Euro emissions standard. This engine has been affected by oil consumption issues on certain production runs, a fact that is well documented. The 1.3 TCe H5H (codes H5H_470 and H5H_494) represents a more recent architecture, shared with Renault, with different internal specifications. The 1.0 TCe H4D (code H4D_480) rounds off the petrol offering on recent entry-level versions. For each of these engines, the unit is sold as a bare engine on an exchange basis: ancillary components (turbo, alternator, starter motor, water pump) are not included and must be reused or replaced separately. The collection covers the five main Dacia models — Duster, Lodgy, Logan, Dokker, Sandero — for the period 2004 to 2026.
