18 Ford models, three families of manual gearbox: why the same 1.6 TDCi doesn't always get the same transmission depending on the year

It's the most common pitfall with Ford vehicles: the same engine capacity, the same model, yet a different gearbox depending on the engine code. On the 1.6 TDCi alone, there are nearly twenty codes — G8DA, G8DB, HHDA, T1DA, T1DB, TZGA, UBGA and also TZJA/TZJB/T3JA — not all of which share the same transmission. A 2005 Focus 1.6 TDCi and a 2010 C-Max 1.6 TDCi may show the same engine capacity on the registration document yet take incompatible gearboxes. The engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable reference.

Transit, Fiesta, Focus: very different architectures under one catalogue

The Transit accounts for the majority of diesel references, centred mainly on the 2.0 TDCi, 2.2 TDCi, 2.4 TDCi and 3.2 TDCi, with 5- or 6-speed manual gearboxes depending on power output and generation. The 2.2 TDCi codes DRFA to DRFF span several model years and take distinct transmissions: never cross-reference part numbers without checking the year of manufacture. Across the compact petrol ranges — Fiesta, Focus, B-Max — the 1.0 EcoBoost appears under seventeen engine codes (M1DA, M1JA, SFCA, SFCB, SFJA, SFJB among others), reflecting the continuous development of this engine between 2012 and 2025 and the accompanying gearbox adaptations.

1.8 TDCi, 1.9 TDCi, 2.5 TDCi: the less common engines not to mix up

The 1.8 TDCi (codes BHPA, P9PA, P9PB, R2PA, RWPA) is fitted primarily to Focus and Mondeo models built before 2010; its IB5 5-speed gearbox is specific to this engine and is not interchangeable with that of the 1.6 TDCi from the same era. The 1.9 TDCi (codes ANU, AUY, AVG) is a Peugeot-Citroën-derived engine fitted to certain Mondeo and Connect variants: its engine codes must not be confused with Ford-developed TDCi units. The 2.5 TDCi found in older Transit models (codes 4EA, 4EB, 4EC, 4FA, 4GA) predates the 2.2 TDCi and is not mechanically compatible with it. The collection covers vehicles from 1995 to 2025: for models produced over a long period, such as the Transit or the Mondeo, checking year by year remains essential before placing any order.
