The Polo is a versatile city car, but its diesel and petrol turbos are not interchangeable

Used daily in urban environments, often at low revs and on short journeys, the Polo puts its turbo through punishing conditions: incomplete warm-up cycles, oil that doesn't circulate long enough to stabilise, and progressive fouling of the intake circuit. On TDI versions in particular, a blocked DPF or a clogged EGR can end up starving the turbo of the lubrication or airflow it needs. The result: worn bearings, excessive axial play, blue or black smoke under acceleration, whistling, or a noticeable loss of power. Before any replacement, it is essential to address the root cause — not just the part itself.

Diesel: four engine families, turbos that don't cross over

The Polo diesel covers a wide range. The 1.9 TDI comes in three distinct power outputs: 90 hp (engine code AGR), 100 hp (engine code ATD), 110 hp (engine code AFN) — and in 90/105 hp versions with engine codes BLS, BSU, BXE. Each of these engines takes a specific turbo: references are not shared between variants, even where the engine capacity is identical. The 1.4 TDI is even more fragmented: engine code AMF (75 hp) does not belong to the same family as BAY, BHC, BMS, BNM, BNV, BWB (70 to 80 hp depending on variant), and engine codes CUSA, CUSB, CYZB correspond to a later generation producing 75, 90 and 105 hp — with a reconditioned turbo available for this last family, whereas the others are supplied new. The 1.6 TDI (engine code CAYB, 90 hp) and the 1.2 TDI (engine code CFWA, 75 hp) are standalone engines with their own turbo references.

Petrol: TSI engines across three generations — the engine code must be checked

On the petrol side, the 1.0 TSI in 95 and 110 hp outputs (engine codes CHZJ, CHZL, DKJA, DKLA) is a small-capacity fixed-geometry unit that is sensitive to intake fouling. The 1.2 TSI (engine codes CBZA, CBZB, CBZC) is a family in its own right, with its own references. The 1.4 TSI in 140 and 150 hp outputs (engine codes CHPA, CPTA, CZEA) is the most powerful engine in the Polo range and, depending on the variant, the only one to combine a turbo with a supercharger. On all these petrol engines, an air leak upstream of the turbo or degraded oil are the first causes of failure to rule out before diagnosing the part itself. The engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable way to select the correct reference: engine capacity and stated power output alone are not sufficient to distinguish between two engines of the same family.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

The turbos on this page are new. Each product page states the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Volkswagen Polo Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

No. The turbos on this page are new and sold as a straight sale: nothing to send back, your old turbo stays with you and there is one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Volkswagen Polo Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
