12 Volvo models, very different engine cycles: the turbo is not a universal part

An XC90 used for towing, a V70 as a family estate on the motorway, an S60 in heavy urban driving, or a C30 in short daily use: the thermal and mechanical stresses placed on the turbo vary considerably depending on the vehicle. On Volvo engines, temperatures rise quickly and cooling-down cycles after switching off the engine are often overlooked — this is one of the leading causes of bearing failure. Before anything else, the root cause of the failure (degraded oil, a clogged lubrication circuit, a foreign body) must be identified and addressed; otherwise, replacing the turbo will solve nothing.

24 engine codes for 36 turbos: the right identification reference

This guide covers 24 distinct engine codes spread across the petrol B families (B4204, B5234, B5244, B5254) and diesel D families (D4164, D4204, D5204, D5244). The same model — such as the S60 or V70 — can be fitted with several different blocks depending on the year and power output: the 2.4 D5 163 hp (D5244T, D5244T2, D5244T5) does not take the same turbo as the 2.0 D3 or D4 (D5204T2, D5204T3, D5204T7). On the petrol side, the 2.5 T and 2.0 T5 245 hp correspond to clearly distinct codes such as B5254T or B4204T11/T15. Engine capacity alone is never enough to identify the exact reference: the engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable starting point.

The 1.6 D 90 hp (DV6UTED4), fitted to the V40 and V50, is of PSA origin and shares its turbo references with the Ford/PSA range of that era — reference families 49173-07500/07503/07508 and PSA cross-references 9652443280 and variants. This block is clearly distinct from Volvo's own turbos and must not be confused with the D4204 or D5204. Common symptoms on these diesel engines — a whistling noise under acceleration, blue or black smoke, a noticeable loss of power — point towards the CHRA, the actuator, or the air hose seals, all of which should be checked before reaching a definitive diagnosis.

New turbos and reconditioned turbos: two statuses depending on the reference

Depending on the reference, the turbo is available new (straightforward sale, no unit to return) or as a reconditioned exchange unit (the old turbo must be returned). Variable-geometry systems, found on the majority of D5244 and D5204 diesel blocks, require the actuator and variable-vane mechanism to be checked before refitting. On petrol blocks with a wastegate, the diagnostic process is different. In all cases, the lubrication circuit must be flushed and the oil supply verified before starting the replacement turbo for the first time.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

The turbos on this page are new. Each product page states the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Volvo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

No. The turbos on this page are new and sold as a straight sale: nothing to send back, your old turbo stays with you and there is one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Volvo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
