Hyundai Gearboxes from 2004 to 2023: Exchange vs Rebuild – What Guides the Choice

Over this nearly twenty-year period, the Hyundai range spans a wide variety of vehicles — from the i10 city car to the Santa Fe SUV, with the i30, Tucson and ix35 accounting for the bulk of enquiries. The first question to ask is not which model you have, but whether a reconditioned exchange unit is available. For common engines such as the 1.6 CRDi (D4FB) or the 2.0 CRDi (D4EA / D4HA), exchange stock is generally well supplied. For less common engines, however — the 2.0 T (G4KF) found in the Genesis or Coupé, the 1.1 CRDi (D3FA) in the i10, or the 1.0 T-GDI 100 Mild Hybrid (G3LF) in the Kona — rebuilding your own gearbox is often the most realistic option, and sometimes the only one.

5- or 6-Speed Manuals: Engine Code Takes Priority Over Engine Capacity

All gearboxes listed here are manual — 5- or 6-speed depending on the engine and vehicle generation. A common pitfall with Hyundai: several engine codes share the same engine capacity. The 1.6 petrol, for instance, covers codes G4ED, G4FD, G4FJ and G4GR, which do not all use the same gearbox. Likewise, the 1.2 may be a G4LA or a G4LF depending on the model and year. Checking the engine code — stamped on the block, shown on the vehicle registration document, or found in the manufacturer's documentation — is essential before placing any order, particularly for the i20 and i30, whose generations overlap between 2008 and 2023.

Known Weak Points on Hyundai Diesel Gearboxes of This Generation

Gearboxes paired with the D4FB (1.6 CRDi, widely used in the i30 and ix35) show known wear on the selector forks and primary shaft bearings, often made worse by heavy urban use or a clutch that was replaced too late. On the D4FD (1.7 CRDi, i40 and Tucson), recurring symptoms include stiff gear changes when cold, pointing to worn synchromesh rings. These factors should be taken into account when assessing whether your own gearbox can be rebuilt or is too badly damaged to be worth reconditioning.

    Frequently asked questions

How much does a reconditioned Hyundai gearbox cost?

The price depends on the engine and the exact reference, and is always well below the price of a new part. For an exact price for your vehicle, enter your number plate or request a free online quote.

Is this Hyundai gearbox compatible with my exact model?

We offer 44 references covering the main Hyundai models. Compatibility is checked against the engine / gearbox code: give us your number plate and we will confirm the exact gearbox for your vehicle.

What is the difference between new, used and exchange?

A used part is resold as is, with no work done. An exchange unit is an original gearbox reconditioned in our workshop, inspected and guaranteed for up to 24 months: reliability close to new, at a used-part price.

What do the warranty and delivery include?

A warranty of up to 24 months, an invoice with every part, return transport arranged for collecting your old unit, delivery throughout Europe and payment in up to 10 instalments.
