Fiat petrol and diesel turbos: two different geometries, two levels of thermal stress

The Fiat turbo catalogue divides clearly into two worlds. On the diesel side, the majority of references cover engine families ranging from the 1.3 Multijet to the 3.0 Multijet, taking in the 1.9 JTD, 2.3 Multijet and the larger 2.8 TD / TDI units found in the Ducato. These engines almost universally use variable-geometry turbos (VGT): the movable vanes allow boost pressure to be adjusted across a wide rev range, but they are also the first point of weakness — gradual clogging, vane seizure, loss of regulation. On the petrol side, the 1.4 T-Jet (codes 198 A1.000, 198 A4.000, 199A8000, 940 B7.000 depending on power output) and the 0.9 TwinAir work differently: these engines use fixed-geometry turbos with a wastegate, which are mechanically simpler but exposed to higher exhaust gas temperatures and highly sensitive to lubrication quality from cold starts.

Models covered and common identification pitfalls

The range spans fifteen models: Ducato, Doblo, Bravo, Punto, Scudo, 500, Tipo, Grande Punto, Panda, 500L, Croma, Fullback, Fiorino, Uno and 500X. A single model may take several different turbos depending on the exact engine and the engine code stamped on the block. On the 1.9 JTD, for example, codes 182 B9.000, 188 B2.000, 223 A7.000, 223 B1.000, 223 B2.000 and M724.19 do not necessarily share the same turbo reference, even at identical power outputs (100 or 105 hp). On the 2.3 Multijet fitted to the Ducato, codes F1AE0481N, F1AE3481D and F1AGL411 correspond to different power outputs (110, 120, 130, 131 hp) and to distinct turbo references. The engine code remains the only reliable starting point: engine capacity or power output alone is not enough to identify the correct reference.

TwinAir and T-Jet: specific symptoms and causes to watch for

The 0.9 TwinAir (codes 312 A2.000 to 312 A7.000, 199 B6.000, 199 B7.000) is a two-cylinder Miller-cycle engine with a turbo that is put under heavy load from low revs. Failures typically show up as an abnormal whistling noise and a sharp drop in torque, made worse by missed oil-change intervals. The 1.4 T-Jet (135, 150, 160 hp Abarth, code 198 A1.000) is prone to CHRA-side seal leaks and bearing damage caused by abrupt engine shut-off without a cooling-down period. In both cases, before fitting a new turbo it is essential to identify and rectify the original cause of failure — clogging, lubrication issues, foreign body — otherwise the new unit will be damaged under the same conditions. All turbos listed on this page are new, available with no unit to return.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Fiat.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Fiat?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
